Patches or appliques have come a long way from the days of stiff designs that were a struggle to attach. New products and materials now make it easy to add style to your garments and accessories.

- Embroidered Patches: Feature detailed designs stitched with thread, common for uniforms and logos, with a classic raised texture.
- Printed Patches/Transfers: Images are printed onto fabric, offering vibrant colors and photo-realistic detail, often used for graphic tees.
- Chenille Patches: Made from yarn for a soft, fuzzy, three-dimensional texture, famous on letterman jackets.
- Applique Patches (Fabric/Felt): Flat pieces of different fabrics layered to create a design, good for quilting or simple decoration.
- Sequined Patches: Feature colorful sequins, often in patterns or shapes like bows, adding sparkle.
- Leather/PVC Patches: Made from these durable materials for a rugged or modern look, though less common as iron-ons than embroidered.
- Iron-On Letters & Numbers: Pre-cut alphabets and numbers in various fonts (embroidered or vinyl), great for personalization.
- Mending Patches: Plain fabric or denim patches, often with adhesive, used specifically to cover holes.
These butterfly appliques were made from a light-weight blouse material that had been backed with a medium-weight fusible interfacing then cut out. The butterflies were then attached using a double-sided fusible webbing called Steam-a-Seam2 to permanent attach them to the jacket. A edge stitching could be applied to each butterfly to make them extra-secure.
